Registration vs. the letter — don’t overpay for the wrong thing
This is the single most important thing to get right, and a lot of sites blur it on purpose. If your goal is a housing accommodation — keeping your animal despite a no-pets policy or a pet fee — the ESA letter is what you need. A registration listing does nothing for that.
Registration is worth it if what you want is a physical ID card, a certificate, and a number people can verify — for identification and convenience. That’s a real thing; it’s just not a legal one. We’d rather tell you that up front than sell you a card you thought would protect your housing.

- Do you have to register an emotional support animal?
- No. There is no official or legally required ESA registry — federal or state. For housing, what actually carries weight is an ESA letter from a licensed mental-health professional, not a listing in any database. Any site telling you that registration is required, or that it grants legal status, is misleading you.
- What's the difference between ESA registration and an ESA letter?
- They're completely different things. An ESA letter is a clinician's document that supports a housing accommodation under the Fair Housing Act — that's the one with legal weight. ESA registration is an ID card, certificate, and a number for identification and convenience. If your goal is housing, you need the letter; registration is optional on top of it.
- Can I register my ESA online?
- You can get an ID card and a verifiable registration number online through NSAR, and it's genuinely useful for identification. Just go in clear-eyed: it's convenience, not legal standing. If a landlord is involved, it's the ESA letter — not the registration — that supports your accommodation request.
